This is the story about how I got my first "strike" here at Virginia Tech. Great. It started one week before finals week last semester; perfect timing. I was in my room with my friend preparing to pregame for probably the last party we were going to go to this semester. Before we were going to start drinking, I was going to leave the room to get a coke. Lucky me, as soon as I opened the door, an R.A. and the R.A. boss, a perfect combination walked by, happened to glance in the room just long enough to catch a glimpse of the alcohol sitting on my fridge. The R.A. stopped, and proceeded to ask me "Hey, how old are you buddy?" Because he said that, I want to reply with "How old do you think ass hole," but I withheld. Instead, in hope of making the situation somewhat funny, I replied with "not old enough?" I got a smile from the R.A., but he still busted me and my friend. He proceeded to make us pour out the alcohol that wasn't drank at all. We got our "court" date and went.
What I don't like most about this situation are too things: 1.We were busted without drinking anything at all, we just got punished for possession. 2. I don't like the fact that I can go over to another country and die for mine, vote for possibly the most powerful man in the world, technically live on my own, but I can't have a drink with my friends. I think that colleges should be a little more lenient about drinking, or the age should be reduced. There is all this talk about how it would be bad if the age was reduced to 18, but it's not like it has never been done. My parents grew up with the drinking age being 18, and they turned out pretty well, my Dad and Mom both became very successful. We treat alcohol consumption in this country as a terrible thing; whereas in other countries, such as Germany, France, or Britain, it is part of their culture and taken a lot less seriously. But that's just my opinion.

haha. im sorry for your strike! I think the drinking age should be dropped as well...i think itd actually save lives because teens wouldnt have to go under the table.
ReplyDeleteI am really sorry for your strike but at least it was just possession and not drunk in public or anything like that. I agree the drinking age should be lower because if teens were used to drinking responsibly as in other countries then they would be less likely to go out and binge drink...
ReplyDeleteOh no! I am really sorry about having to get a CR. I also agree that the drinking age should be lowered. I think having the age too high causes more chaos. In other countries, there are so such things as a drinking age and you do not hear much reports regarding binge drinking and DUI's.
ReplyDeleteI fourth the opinion that the drinking age should be lowered. And it's too bad that you got a CR, but like everyone said, it could have been worse. Last year I had a student, a very good, hardworking, and smart student, who got busted for Marijuana possession and got kicked out right away. Also, even though I sympathize with your position, it is kind of funny if you think about it, the coincidence of perfect factors -- actually seeing into your fridge because the door and the door to the fridge was open? Your RA being with the RA boss? I mean, I bet if the boss hadn't been there, your RA would probably have given you a warning and made you get rid of the alcohol. Do you think there's a lesson in this? Some people are hyper-vigilant about the not-so-legal things they do, checking and double-checking and being paranoid. I'm not a paranoid person by nature, but it seems like, with the laws being the way they are and the drinking age being 21, it would serve you well to be super-paranoid, just because getting caught can have drastic consequences...
